Ninety Six National Historic Site
by
Ambria Lanteigne
Ninety Six National Historic Site, located about 35 miles west of Newberry, South Carolina, is one of the nation's best preserved colonial and Revolutionary War sites. Called the Star Fort by many locals, the area was important to both the Colonists and the British during the war. During the early days of the war in 1775, the first land battle south of New England was fought at the site. Colonial soldier James Birmingham was wounded in the battle and became the first soldier from South Carolina to be killed in the Revolutionary War.
