Pantomime History, Traditions and Superstitions
by
Linda Sandeman
The idea of pantomime originated in ancient Greece, and later rose to popularity during the reign of Augustus in ancient Rome. The name is taken from a masked dancer called Pantomimus, and the comedy and tragedy content of modern pantomime has clear links with the Commedia dell'Arte which started in Italy in the Middle Ages and reached England by the middle of the 17th century when the Commedia dell'Arte characters first began to appear in English plays. Often the Commedia dell'Arte touring troupes were made up of family members who generally improvised their way through a plot involving characters...

Heisman Trophy - College Football's Player of the Year Award - Week Eight
by
Paul F Wilson
The pack of legitimate Heisman candidates continues to shrink. With this week's games in the books, it is time to take a look back at the performances of the players competing for this year's college player of the year award. Still in the hunt for this prize are Ohio State's Troy Smith, Notre Dame's Brady Quinn, West Virginia's Steve Slaton, Rutger's Ray Rice, Michigan's Michael Hart, and Tennessee's Eric Ainge.

Heisman Trophy Top-10 for Monday, October 9
by
Larry Ness
Auburn became the first top-10 team this year to lose to an unranked opponent when the No. 2 Tigers lost to Arkansas 27-10 on Saturday. Florida became the AP's new No. 2 team (the fourth school this year to hold the No. 2 spot) and will ironically visit Jordon-Hare Stadium this Saturday to play the Tigers. One also can't find either Florida State or Miami-Florida in the latest AP top-25 poll for the first time since the final poll of the 1982 season, a span of 24 years. There was not nearly as big a shake-up in my latest Heisman top-10, as Ohio State's Troy Smith continues be the unquestioned front-runner. My latest Heisman update follows.

Heisman Trophy Top-10 for October 2, 2006
by
Larry Ness
The month of September came to a close this past Saturday and the Ohio State Buckeyes have clearly established themselves as the nation's No. 1 team. Three of the team's first five wins have come over ranked opponents with two of those wins coming on the road. OSU beat then-No. 2 Texas (defending champs) in Austin back on September 9 (24-7) and last Saturday night trounced No. 13 Iowa by the score of 38-17. QB Troy Smith has now led OSU to 12 straight wins (12-0 ATS as well) and enters the month of October as the Heisman front-runner. My entire Heisman top-10 follows.

Hesiman Trophy Top-10 (Monday, October 23)
by
Larry Ness
There are six CFB weekends remaining in the 2006 regular season, with almost all schools wrapping up their games over the next five weekends. While this year's season still has many significant things yet to be decided, the 2006 Heisman chase has clearly become a "two-horse" race between two QBs, Ohio State's Troy Smith and Notre Dame's Brady Quinn. And, Smith has a significant lead as he passes the three-quarters pole! My latest Heisman update follows.

Ness Notes (Heisman Update / College Hoops Begin)
by
Larry Ness
As I've been saying for weeks now, this year's Heisman winner will be won by one of two QBs, Ohio State's Troy Smith or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn. Quinn has the much better numbers lately but it shouldn't go unnoticed that the Irish haven't exactly faced "Murderers Row." Since Notre Dame was beaten badly by Michigan back on September 16 (47-21), Quinn has rebounded (he threw three INTs vs the Wolverines and lost a fumble that was returned for a TD) by leading Notre Dame to six straight wins, as the Irish have averaged 34.8 PPG.

Heisman Trophy - College Football's Player of the Year Award - Week Five
by
Paul F Wilson
With another exciting week of college football in the books, this year's race for the Heisman saw two of our top contenders put together personal performances that helped distance themselves from their competitors. Ohio State's Troy Smith and Northern Illinois' Garrett Wolfe put forth performances worthy of Heisman voters' attention, and also worthy of team victories. An important consideration in this week's analysis is that Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma, and Steve Slaton, West Virginia, enjoyed some extra time off. They will be back in action this week, so we will keep a close eye on their performances to see how their week of rest affects their play.

Heisman Trophy - College Football's Player of the Year Award - Week Six
by
Paul F Wilson
With each passing week the field of legitimate Heisman candidates comes more clearly into focus. A high level of consistency becomes increasingly important when competing at this level. Some of the players we have followed up to this point in the season are worthy of recognition for their contributions to their teams' success, but they may be slipping slowly out of contention for the Heisman.
