History of the Davis Cup Trophy
by
Andy McCarthy
In the initial format for the Davis Cup tournament beginning in 1900, all competing teams would compete against one another to qualify to challenge the reigning champions in the final round. In order to accommodate the increase in the competition's number of participating teams over the years, however, the Davis Cup tournament began splitting into zones until the tournament for the actual Cup eventually became limited to the world's top sixteen tennis-playing nations each year, which make up the tournament's World Group, with the remaining nations being divided into four geographic zones to compete for future opportunities to become one...

Davis Cup Winners and Records
by

South Africa is the only nation in the history of the Davis Cup to have won the trophy without ever having to play a finals match on the tennis court - and has never actually competed in any finals round in the entire history of the Davis Cup competition. No country outside of the United States, France, Great Britain/British Isles, and Australia/Australasia had ever won the championship until 1974, when South Africa broke those four teams' domination over the tournament with its default win against India, whose team refused to compete against them in the final in protest against their apartheid policies. In the first rounds, Colombia had been victorious over the United States, and India had defeated Australia.

Dwight Davis won his singles match on day one, and together with Holcombe Ward conquered the doubles match on day two. That year, the teams were supposed to complete the remaining matches even though the United States had already secured its team's position as the winner of the cup.
