Review: Captain Phillips
by
Jaskee Hickman
According to what I've read about the book that Captain Phillips is based on, a good portion of the story that we're told is a work of fiction. Some of the crew members who were aboard the "Maersk Alabama" say that the real Captain Phillips isn't exactly the hero that he claims to be and put them in the center of trouble in the first place. That's essentially why I included the second paragraph in this review. It wasn't as prominently featured in the film as it probably should have been.

"Captain Phillips" Brings a True Tale to Life, If Not Complete Truth
by
Zack Mandell
"Captain Phillips" purports to tell the tale of a 2009 oil ship that was boarded by Somali pirates. The New York Post and other news outlets have published articles decrying the story of the film as a lie remade for Hollywood that disregards the truth of the crew's actions. The movie itself stands on its own legs as a thrilling piece of cinema entertainment, and it claims only to be based on the true tale of the Somali hijacking.

4 Ways of Turning Back Before It's Too Late
by
Steve Wickham
The quote above, from the motion picture, Captain Phillips, casts the pirate leader, Muse, in the light of desperate man who has glimpses of reasonability. When Captain Phillips tells him there is no use in continuing, Muse reveals his own plight - he has gone beyond the point of no return. The Somali pirate has his bosses to satisfy. Even though he's hijacked a cache of $6 million last year, he's still doing the desperate work of crime to satisfy his warlord boss, Garaad. We, like Muse, sometimes find we have come too far; and we can't give up. But it is better to walk away from some things having lost than go all the way and lose everything!

Captain Phillips Review

Ever since I first watched Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks as a plane crash survivor isolated on a Pacific island, it was obvious he was an unforgettable and incredible actor, pouring emotion out of every role he imbued. The same goes for this film, the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years. In an interview with the Telegraph Director Paul Greengrass explained how the film was a tale of two Captains from...
