Lack of Planning - Diminishing Potential For Success
by
Munir Moosa
The results of term examinations, in every institute, are a means to evaluate the extent of effectiveness of the system in educating the students. However, lack of transparency, corruption, dubious evaluation criteria etc are causing increased concern with regard to the authenticity of the prevalent education system as a whole. Students generally feel a need for the overhauling of the whole system and forming an education board with an effective curriculum and assessment techniques.

First impressions about this band entered my mind before I even had the chance to check out this disc. Is this a solo artist? Is it a strange name? What is a Biffy Clyro, exactly? Bjork is another of those singers that I like but none of my friends do. I first started listening to Bjork when my sister P had the album Debut and I listened to it one day and was hooked. Most of my friends think she is a bit weird, but I kinda like that and I also think she has an amazing voice and is pretty cute. Not Your Standard Life
by
Kent Healy
From the outside, it looked like any other roadside cafe in the middle of a barren desert. From the inside, it looked like nothing I could ever imagine! When I walked in the front door of this diner, my jaw dropped to the floor. The room was jam-packed with 1950s antiques, gadgets, and toys-every piece of 50s memorabilia ever produced was in that room! Every corner, every shelf, every spot on the wall was adorned with some form of antique. Despite the clutter, one thing really grabbed my attention. It was a yellow plastic sign that hung over the grill. It read, "If we don't meet your standards, feel free to lower yours."

Misconceptions About Mumbai and Bombay
by
Kunal Pandya
Political parties have always cached in on the Marathi Manoos agenda and Mumbai of the Marathis 'wrongly' conceptualized philosophy. In 1995 when Bal Thakeray lead 4 decade old Shiv Sena came into power in the state, the first thing the party did was to rename Bombay as Mumbai and the controversy has never stopped since then. However, if the change of names is cultural, so be it.

What Are Bhajans?
by
Pandit Ram
Bhajans were first found in the fourth book of the Vedas, Sama Veda. Bhajans are generally sung in groups with one person leading and the rest following him, singing in chorus. The lyrics of these bhajans generally depict the lives, glory of Indian Gods, their teachings or any other anecdote. Bhajans have profound appeal to the masses because of their colloquial renderings and proximity to the God. Bhajans have been deeply rooted into the Hindu tradition and is an integral part of their culture. You can see people singing bhajans and hymns on almost every other occasion. The popularity of bhajans can be judged from the fact that there are different bhajans for different occasion and their number is growing exponentially.

White Bridesmaid Dresses: The Next Big Thing?
by

When Pippa Middleton was spotted at the royal wedding wearing a white crepe bridesmaid dress, suffice it to say that people were quite surprised. I guess when you are as stunning as Kate Middleton, now Duchess Catherine, you don't have to worry about being upstaged by another woman wearing a white dress at your wedding. It was a daring choice, nonetheless, and it will be very interesting to see if white bridesmaid dresses become the next big thing in wedding trends.

The Royal Wedding was hyped for months - what would she wear? What would the ceremony be like? Knock off "replicas" - in a race to be ready to wear and accessible to "everyday" brides (at a nice profit, mind you). All the hype and it's hard to tell if I was describing British Royalty or American "Reality Royalty". So, who won in the battle of wedding of the year? And whose wedding left a bad taste in our mouth?

BOOK REVIEW: THE PEARL by John Steinbeck
by
Lynai Lamason
John Steinbeck (1902-1968) is one of America's greatest writers and is a Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1962. I must confess, though, that this is the first time I read a book by him, all thanks to Jzhun who kept on raving about how wonderful a writer John Steinbeck is. I bought my copy of this book for only Php17.00 from Booksale, but certainly this book is worth a thousand more than its price.

The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck - A Book Review
by
Michael Cooper
The Grapes of Wrath combines Steinbeck adoration of the land, his simple hatred of corruption resulting from materialism (money) and his abiding faith in the common people to overcome the hostile environment. The novel opens with a retaining picture of nature on rampage. The novel shows the men and women that are unbroken by nature. The theme is one of man verses a hostile environment. His body destroyed but his spirit is not broken.

Steinbeck's Cannery Row
by
Janette Griffiths
Cannery Row, in Monterey, California lies between Castroville and Carmel. Castroville, the "artichoke capital of the world" once crowned a young Marilyn Monroe "the first California Artichoke Queen," in 1947. Carmel once had Clint Eastwood as mayor. Back in the 1930s, where John Steinbeck set his novel of the same name, Cannery Row once had sardines - millions and millions of them swirling around just offshore waiting for the Chinese and the Sicilian and the Portuguese immigrants to fish them out of the Pacific.

Cathy Trask: A Representation of Satan in the Book "East of Eden"
by
Maria Cristina Gornez
"If you can believe in saints, you can believe that somebody can be all good, you've got to believe that somebody can be all bad." - John Steinbeck As I read the book "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck, I admit that at first, I felt that I am just being obligated because I need it for my term paper. But as soon as I start reading the book it seems that I am reading a modern version of the "Book of Genesis." Curiosity arouses, when the characters unfolds the mystery of their identity especially when I encounter the character of Cathy Ames later known as Cathy Trask, the character that leaves an impression, the character whom Steinbeck represents as Satan in the story.

The American Dream and Eugene O'Neill
by
Ruzbeh Babaee
The present study is about Eugene O'Neill's great achievements, The Iceman Cometh and Long Lay's Journey into Night. This study traces the features of "The American Dream" in these two particular plays. Here "The American Dream" is considered as a myth. It is the myth of success that for many centuries the people of America have been looking for it. They have been looking for happiness, freedom, fame, money, equality, and new values in "The American Dream". O'Neill in his plays has thought a great deal about man in relation to his social environment and has criticized the whole structure of American society. O'Neill did not accept the illusions and the ideals that were created by "The American Dream". He criticized the social values. His attitude towards his country and its values was critical and in a number of plays he has focused on the failure and collapse of these values.

The American Dream Speech
by
John Ferraro
The American Dream is inspired by the glory of a dream. A dream that says welcome to our vast home. A home whose foundation has survived the quake of war, the brutal attacks of terror and the constant threat from those who wish to defy our constitution. We rejoice in knowing the American Dream has not weakened but rather strengthened in adversity, grown stronger through conflict and rests in the arms of the greatest military in the world. Our freedom is their promise. Our lives are fortified by the men and women who bravely sacrifice theirs. God Bless this great nation!

Secret Life of the American Teenager
by
Michael Fedrick
Numerous televised serials look at the personal life of the American teenager and the disputes in that. Teens have constantly been considered as being on a different level from elders. They are of an age when they feel that they not belong to either the children or adults group, and often seemed to have rules of their own.

The American Dream Exposed: Why Most Dream While Few Achieve
by
Joel Cowen
It is my personal opinion that this country was built on the dreams and desires our founding fathers had for something more. They were tired of living in a corrupt society where they weren't truly free. How scary must it have been to pack up everything you had, hop on a boat heading for a brand new country (and hoping you actually got there.) This country was built from the imagination of entrepreneurs.

Presentations to the American People
by
Lance Winslow
When giving a presentation to the American people it is important to talk with conviction and strength of character. Anything less is unworthy of such a great nation and its people. We live in the greatest nation in the history of mankind and it is unfortunate that those who were in charge often talk without conviction. Our current president seems to do a pretty good job when he is talking directly to the American people.

A Review On The New Temperance - The American Obsession With Sin And Vice, By David Wagner
by
Robabe Sarikhani
General subject matter: repression of pleasure in America and the constant mantra of danger. Theme: a compelling historical and sociological and philosophical analysis of the American infatuation with sin and immorality. Thesis: the author reasons The New Temperance as a strategy to serve social class interests and popular social movement.
