Lent

Lent
Thoughts on Lent
by
David Good
The world needs to see that the faith we profess has power every day of the year, not just during Lent. They are looking for something to make sense of life everyday. They want to know that it is not only real, but that it is eternal. Let's make Lent something that testifies openly of a way of life that is lived privately. That is the way Jesus lived and it changed the world.

A Reformed Evanjellybean Reconsiders Lent
by
Marie Notcheva
A staunch Baptist looks at Lent through a biblical lens. Why Protestants need to re-learn the disciplines of repentance, prayer, and study to cultivate self-control - a fruit of the Spirit. Can we observe a liturgical season without getting caught up in extra-biblical trappings? Yes, we can - and we will deepen our walks with Christ if we do.

Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent
by
Jessie Penn
Mardi Gras is the last day of feasting and ends the day before Lent begins. This is why, in New Orleans, Mardi Gras ends abruptly at midnight as Ash Wednesday begins. Police usher party goers out of the area, while street sweepers clear the debris from the roadway.

Why Does Lent Have 40 Days?
by
Michael G. Davis
Lent has 40 days - ever wonder why? Lent is the 40 day long penitential period in the Catholic Church, immediately prior to the Paschal Feast (Easter) the greatest feast in the Church. The Eastern Catholic churches call this period Great Lent.

Fasting For Lent
by
Craig Condon
There once was a little boy named Bobby, who desperately wanted a new bicycle. His plan was to save his nickels, dimes and quarters until he finally had enough to buy a new 10-speed bike. Each night he asked God to help him save his money. Kneeling beside his bed, he prayed, "Dear Lord, please help me save my money for a new bike, and please, Lord, don't let the ice cream man come down the street again tomorrow."

Fasting for Lent: Taking the Challenge
by
Chad Torgerson
Each year, Catholics struggle to decide what to give up for Lent. We may give up junk food, soda, or even alcohol. Often times, we try to bargain with God by trying to choose something that is challenging, but not too challenging. We are afraid to stretch our faith. This year, as you begin to ponder this yearly tradition, take a step in faith. This year, try giving up food.

Lent - Walking to the Cross - How Should We Follow? Acceptance, Acclimatisation, Activity
by
Steve Wickham
Lent is a time of preparation; well at least it is to me. I found my most rewarding Lent season was in 2004, personally, travelling the "Passion of the Christ" season--seeing the film seven times--living through my own dark season, eating very sparsely and walking; sometimes over thirty kilometres a day. Three things should be incorporated into your Lent preparations this year.
