Review: The Fifth Estate
by
Jaskee Hickman
The Fifth Estate tells the story of Julian Assange as he goes as deep as he can to expose the many infractions of governments, banks and other organizations doing things that they're not supposed to be doing. He's relentless in his work and is determined to unmask and broadcast the illegal behaviors of the "powers that be" with the hopes of ultimately bringing them to their knees. His ferocious approach to accomplishing this mixed with a level of intelligence that some may perceive as superior leads him to developing wikileaks after years of doggedly hunting down the people with a discernible degree of financial power that have the capability of corrupting the ungoverned who make their own rules.

WOULD RATHER DO THE KESSEL RUN? Franchise Disdain Colors "Star Trek Into Darkness"
by
Paul Anthony Llossas
"Star Trek Into Darkness" is akin to the central conceit of "The Wizard of Oz". The movie works if you allow yourself to be taken in by the spectacle but fail to look for the proverbial man behind the curtain.

Sherlock and Rationality in Modern Times
by
Taz S Rai
In July 2010, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat's spectacular new television series, Sherlock, aired in the UK. The three 90-minute episodes gave the public a much needed reminder of why Arthur Conan Doyle's stories are so timeless, and why his greatest character is still a hero in modern times.

THE DESOLATION OF TOLKIEN: Peter Jackson Creates a Derivative Mixed-Bag in The Desolation of Smaug
by
Paul Anthony Llossas
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens with director Peter Jackson appearing in costume in the city of Bree. Staring directly into the camera, he takes a loud chomp off of a carrot (bookending a similar seen from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), and marches off. While this seems on its surface to be a tongue-in-cheek homage to Alfred Hitchcock, his manner and presentation takes on a meta-textual feel as if declaring "This is MY house", an assertion the film cements.

Movie Review: "Star Trek Into Darkness"
by
Zack Mandell
Combine genre golden boy J.J. Abrams, a returning cast of proven characters, and what might have been the worst-kept secret in the history of Hollywood, and the result is the box-office success that is "Star Trek Into Darkness." The second installment in the reboot was met with approval from fans new and old. Life-long Trekkies could appreciate the winks given to the original series, while newer fans were enthralled with the charismatic characters.

Review: 12 Years a Slave
by
Jaskee Hickman
The story in 12 Years a Slave focuses on Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an African-American who was born and raised as a free man in the northeastern region of the United States of America. It's based on his personal account of the 12 years that he spent as a slave in the southern parts of America. 1841 was the year that he first ran into his unfortunate while living in Sarasota, New York with his wife and two children. He's living a good life at this point and is regarded as a talented violinist by those that he considers to be friends, family and associates.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" - One More Trip to the Shire
by
Zack Mandell
Ever since 2012's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" reintroduced audiences to Middle-earth, fans of the series have eagerly awaited director Peter Jackson's next step into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Although the first movie in the "Hobbit" trilogy may have suffered from a few pacing problems as it introduced its incredibly large cast of principals, "The Desolation of Smaug" seems to have learned a few important lessons from its predecessor and provides a tighter and more epic story, if not a perfect one.

Movie Review - 12 Years a Slave
by
Eric Mwebe
12 years a slave, a movie by Steve Macqueen gives an account of how horrifying slavery was and recognizes how these people of the past are not that different from us. Doing evil is a choice humanity makes. The depiction of the movie centers on a true story to establish the turmoil of blacks during the slave period. The movie unfolds events that befell Solomon Northur, a man, his wife and family that were living in Saratoga, New York in 1814. This was a dangerous time for African-Americans because of runaway Africans who were required at the time, by law to be returned down South to their masters. Some entrepreneurs looked at this opportunity as a business venture and opted to kidnap free men and sell them off as slaves by claiming that the slaves were runaways. This kind of event was one on which Solomon befell and was transported down South, sold and subjected to all form of abuse and dehumanizing treatment for 12 years.
