State Citizenship Is Alive And Well

State citizenship and United States citizenship are provided for in the Constitution of the United States. The Supreme Court, in the Slaughter House Cases [1873], recognized that State citizenship and United States citizenship were separate and distinct. In addition, the Supreme Court went further by saying that there are citizens of the United States and citizens of the several States. The courts, however, use the terms "citizen of the United States" and "citizen of a State."
