Alex Salmond
The Rise of Scotland First Minister, Alex Salmond
by
Milton Johanides
Alex Salmond's SNP party in Scotland secured 69 of the 129 seats in the recent elections for the Scottish parliament, exceeding an already optimistic target of 61. Salmond is now Scotland's First Minister with a strong mandate to hold a referendum on Scottish Independence. This is such an unforeseen and critical blow to UK parliamentarians south of the border that comparisons with Braveheart, William Wallace, are not entirely inappropriate. Salmond is officially the defender of Scottish freedom with a beady eye on the huge reserves of oil still sitting close to Scottish shores.

Alex Salmond Wants Independence in the UK
by
Effie Deans
This article looks at the model for Scottish independence put forward by the Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond. It is becoming clearer that the SNP's vision amounts to Scotland being independent within the UK. This position is essentially contradictory and would not be in the self-interest of the rest of the UK.

Scotland The Brave - Pointing The Way To A New World
by
Milton Johanides
Here was some good news for a change! Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, yesterday welcomed the wind turbine deal with Mitsubishi which will bring a hundred million pounds worth of investment to Scotland and create around two hundred jobs. This further endorses Scotland's (and Salmond's) commitment to a renewable energy environment in the not too distant future and shows once more that England's smaller neighbour has some big ideas. Still smarting from losing out on the benefits of North Sea oil during the eighties, the Scots will be chuffed with this latest development which makes Scotland a leader in the field for this type of energy resource.

Scottish Independence - Will Pragmatic Politics Maintain the Union?
by
Henry Wiggins
This essay explores the issue of Scottish independence after the SNP's electoral victory. The key issues analysed are whether independence is practical for Scotland, the effect on tax revenue for Scotland and the UK, and the consequence for currently shared institutions. A key theme is that Scotland may be better off seeking more powers, but not full independence.

The Legacy of the Iron Lady and the Return to Bannockburn
by
Milton Johanides
Following a period of political disagreement over the best way to deal with the UK deficit and the country's future emergence from recession, there now seems to be political consensus. A series of Prime Ministers' Questions in January has seen Cameron attacking executive greed and speaking out in favour of "capitalism with social responsibility". He has also accepted the need...

Congratulations Keith Brown, New Transport Minister For Scotland!
by
Milton Johanides
I knew Keith Brown when I lived in Scotland and he appeared to be a nice guy with solid principles and a sound work ethic. It is gratifying to see him now promoted to Transport Minister in Scotland and expect him to show the same level of intelligent application to that role as he has done to others. But it won't be easy. He has accepted what is arguably the toughest job in modern politics, to meet head on the challenge of Scotland's weather! I lived in Scotland for ten years and got to appreciate why they call it God's country, with its beautiful lochs and glens, but the weather I have to tell you comes straight from the devil.

Why Scottish Unionists Should Be Concerned About English Nationalism
by
Effie Deans
This article looks at how Scottish nationalism has provoked a backlash in England fueling a rise of English nationalism. This is in fact a greater danger to Scottish unionists than Scottish nationalism, for while it is unlikely that Scots will vote for independence, if provoked enough the English just might.

How the SNP Uses Anglophobia to Split the Union
by
Effie Deans
This article looks at the relationship between the Anglophobia which exists in Scotland and support for Scottish independence. Although the SNP claim not to be anti-English and would like to be seen as putting forward a form of civic nationalism based solely on residency, it is becomes clear from a little analysis that this civic nationalism is founded on ethnic nationalism and could not exist without it. The desire for independence therefore is rooted firmly in the age old hatred of Scotland's nearest neighbour.
