First of all the fact that the Internet is being used by otherwise intelligent people including congress people, teachers, lawyers, and other professionals for legal yet embarrassing activities shows the poor state of our educational system in the digital world. Many Americans participate in behaviors that while not legal others would not approve of. Given that these are likely done in the privacy of their own being, for all practical purposes, it is irrelevant.

How can you reconcile the following circular argument: addiction is a brain disease that renders people powerless to change, however the only way to overcome your addiction is to make a choice to change? Confused? So are millions of people struggling with so-called addictions. From video gaming, to pornography, to sex, food, gambling, alcohol or drug use; addiction has become synonymous with powerlessness, relapse and failure. It has also become a convenient excuse for poor or harmful behaviors each time an individual is caught with their hand in the proverbial cookie jar.

We live in a sex-negative culture that promotes tremendously unrealistic standards for sexual desire, attraction and expression. Our culture also loves to sexually shame people and we use sexual shame as a means for gaining cultural currency. The phenomenon of politicians who engage in sexual dishonesty is right in line with our sex-negativity and its why we love a sex scandal.

The Internet has changed all that. Workers can now engage in inappropriate sexually charged behaviors in relative privacy and anonymity.
