"A little too much" sums up the entirety of Tarsem Singh's whimsical fairy tale Mirror Mirror. From the lavish costume designs and bizarre CG creations to the over-the-top acting and points of monumental silliness, the latest reimagining of the Snow White fable confronts its zenith in every facet and intrepidly breaches it. The film's inability to show restraint in its slapstick visuals and madcap gags causes a predictable repetition of puerility.

Mirror Mirror reinterprets the Snow White legend as a whimsical, lighthearted comedy appropriate for the whole family. Some will inevitably be turned off by this approach, but I found it to be quite pleasant and entertaining. It certainly is easy on the eyes; directed by Tarsem Singh, known for his beautifully offbeat visuals, the film is a triumph of art direction, set decoration, and costume design. The latter is especially prominent. All of the characters are adorned in bold and colorful garments, some flowing and beautiful, others unique and eccentric, all strangely and unexplainably organic-looking. Costume designer Eiko Ishioka, who died in January at the age of seventy-three, may be deserving of a posthumous Academy Award nomination for her efforts.

The Baader Meinhof Complex - A Thorough Film Review

I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of world history and monumental events that occurred pre-1990 is nothing short of pathetic. I am definitely not what you would call a "buff." With that being said, it should come to no surprise to you that before watching The Baader Meinhof Complex (Der Baader Meinhof Komplex), I knew little to nothing about the German terrorist group the Red Army Faction (RAF) or the impact they had on both European and world history. So I will not be able to partake in the argument as to whether or not the film is historically and factually accurate. Instead, I will judge the film on the success that it has on being just that, a film.

When I was in school we all read the books of Mickey Spillane. I remember once my English teacher admonished me not to read Spillane as it would corrupt my language. But now decades later I am glad that I read Spillane and thankful that the United States produced a writer like him.
