by
Antony Heywood
I always believed that winning an Oscar led to fame and fortune, red carpets, film offers and a house in the Hollywood Hills. Well if you bag one of the top Oscars it might well do but Richard A Baker has won a total of six, yes that's six academy awards but he is not a household name.

History of the Oscar Statuette
by
Andy McCarthy
The Academy Award of Merit, or the Oscar Statuette, designed to symbolize film achievement, is constructed of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base, stands at over a foot tall, and weighs eight and a half pounds. It is designed as an Art Deco styled knight poised with a sword in hand, standing upon a film reel with five spokes, each of which symbolize the original five branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: Producers, Directors, Writers, Actors, and Technicians. (Now the Academy is divided into fifteen branches: actors, directors, cinematographers, producers, executives, writers, art directors, musicians, sound, visual effects, make up artists and hairstylists, public relations, documentary, feature animation, and short film.)

Hiral Shah
Quite a few of the Oscar 2011 nomination categories are going to see surprises churned out. This is even as a question mark looms in few of the other groups. The contenders for the best feature length documentary Oscar 2011 are many. Most of these listed visual works of nonfiction are overwhelming and brilliant in their own unique ways. Preview night lists the strongest names from among whom, more or less a winning title should be declared.

Tough Luck at the Oscars
by
Zack Mandell
There are a handful of actors who will publicly profess their disdain for the Academy Awards, because they don't think that artists should be pitted against each other for fame and glory. Those actors would be in the minority, as most would love nothing more than to win the iconic gold statue. A few very worthy actors seemed to have had an Oscar in the bag but ultimately lost to someone else despite the fact that the losing actor's performance may have been better.

by
Annette Labedzki
Oscar Rejlander started working as a portraitist at Wolverhampton, in approximately 1846. Rejlander learned the skills of photography in 1850, to facilitate his painting techniques and produced many works, including the most famous "The Two Ways of Life" (1857). This work was meticulously printed from 32 glass negatives. Portraiture and genre works were a couple of key dimensions of Rejlander's works.

Two Excellent Films That Could Not Win an Oscar
by
Ed Bagley
Secondhand Lions is a masterpiece of storytelling written and directed by Tim McCanlies (remember the name). Near as I can tell, this film generated little stir when made in 2003, and had absolutely no nominations for Oscars (what a shame). First time French Director Christophe Barratier has given us an incredibly good movie in The Chorus, which was nominated for two Oscars but came up empty handed at the presentations. No matter. It did not affect the effort and excellence of The Chorus.
