Conventional geopolitical thinking has long assumed that North Korea has pursued an unrelenting campaign of provocations, its illicit nuclear program, and even a nuclear weapons test with the objective of assuring the survival of its current regime. Regime survival has little to do with North Korea's recent provocative behavior. North Korea's aims are far more ambitious. As a result, North Korea is not likely to alter its present course and security guarantees or economic inducements will likely prove ineffective.

North Korea views Kim Jong-il's "immortal" contribution as his "Songun" principle. Songun entails a powerful army-centered state. Nuclear weapons are at the heart of such a state. As a result, diplomatic breakthroughs with respect to North Korea's nuclear arsenal and advancing missile delivery systems are not likely at least through the medium-term.

North Korea's Hand Has Been Reaching Japan For Over 30 Years

Sado island, one of remote places in Japan. In spite of that, it has a curious history and it can't escape being thrust into the spot light even today. Located in the Sea of Japan, Koreans call it East Sea, close to Korea and Russia. International intrigue played there. I grew up on the mainland right across from Sado island. Past is interesting but its excitement is not ending. We will all be thrust into our future. We have to keep our wits about or else. We will make it but its twist and turn is more than a genial surprise.

North Korean leaders are known for making outlandish statements, declaring war, and causing a scene on the global stage. Still, each time they do this, it emboldens other nations and other rogue regimes to do the same. It doesn't help having people like Ahmadinejad in Iran, or Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, or even Gadhafi in Libya running around causing problems in the world. This this poor behavior is unbecoming of a world leader, and it is unacceptable in this day and age.

It seems like Kim Jong-Il, the notorious leader of North Korea has been a thorn in the side of the US State Department, the US military, and the United States for quite some time. It also appears that China doesn't really wish to do a lot about it, because it bogs down the United States and actually helps China serve its own political will. One issue that not a lot of people are talking about is the fact that the United States does have the power to go in and stop North Korea from proliferating nuclear weapons.
