Why Are We Arguing About "Confederate History Month" In Virginia?
by
D Moore
I'm not sure why we are arguing about the Governor of Virginia Bob McDonnell declaring April to be "Confederate History Month." I understand that the issue of slavery was not mentioned in this declaration, but everyone should know that slavery did exist.

GOP Govs Succeeding in Spite of Obama's Economic Policies
by
Scott Spiegel
On Friday the Bureau of Labor Statistics released disheartening statistics showing that the nation's employers added many fewer than expected jobs to their payrolls in May. The unemployment rate ticked up for the first time in almost a year from 8.1% to 8.2%. The stock market suffered its worst day all year, and the dip in Friday's Dow Jones Industrial average completely erased 2012's gains. Democrats' constructive response to these dismal numbers was to accuse Republicans of being happy the economy was tanking.

Moving on From the Past to Embrace the Future
by
Will McCorkle
Last week the newly elected Republican Governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, made a declaration to celebrate Confederate History Month in his state. This doesn't greatly surprise me. I was born in South Carolina. However, it seems like we could have evolved beyond this by the year 2010.

Religious Teapot Tempest
by
Gene Lalor
The adage that friends should never discuss religion or politics if they wish to remain friends has a great deal of validity unless, that is, the friends fundamentally agree on the two topics. Likewise, religion or politics should never be intruded on public matters unless one is prepared for volatile dissent.

Politicians - Get the Word Out Digitally Through an iPhone App!
by
Tee Marek
The mobile generation by definition consumes their information content while on the move. How does a politician tap into this information consumption? One answer is to have a sharable iPhone App that is integrated with mainstream digital social media networks. In this sense, the App is a mobile version of a politicians digital footprint, but with much more functionality relevant to the mobile generation.

The News on the Curb: National Motorcycle Rights and Concerns You Should Know
by
Darnell A
When you're riding through this great nation, each county has their own restrictions pertaining to motorcycles and you need to know that just because your bike is allowed in your county, it may not be in another. Something as simple as handlebar height can get you pulled over. After you have been stopped, the officer can start asking questions and a chain of violations may be discovered as well. Before leaving, check out the laws where you are traveling.

Open Season in the Atlantic
by
S. Wolfe
There was a collective green gasp late last month when President Barack Obama announced a proposal to open part of the eastern seaboard, the Gulf Coast and Arctic sea to offshore oil drilling. "We're appalled that the president is unleashing a wholesale assault on the oceans," says Oceana Senior Campaign Director Jacqueline Savitz. "Expanding offshore drilling is the wrong move if the Obama administration is serious about improving energy security, creating lasting jobs and averting climate change.

Virginia Doesn't Want $125 Million in Federal Stimulus Money
by
Carolyn Capalbo
In Virginia, representatives from the House Republican leaders, several local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, claimed employers would be facing an increase of payment to the unemployment trust fund of up to $4.50 per employee per year. They were concerned the short term gain would result in long term regret in later years.
