Sonic the Hedgehog was originally a game character and hero in many games created by Sega for the Sega Genesis. Artist Naoto Oshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka are credited with the creation of Sonic, the blue anthropomorphic hedgehog, who can run faster than the speed of sound. That is one of the major factors of the games, in case you didn't know.

Sonic wasn't just enjoyed in normal side scrolling game fashion. There were quite a few off shoot versions that featured Sonic and crew. Things like Sonic Spinball, Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and Sonic 3D Blast. These games definitely weren't along the traditional lines of the Sonic series, and seemed to play off of popular games or concepts of the time.

If Nintendo has Mario, Sega has Sonic. He shot in popularity in 1991, released primarily to rival Nintendo's Mario. Sonic leads adventures very similar to Mario. If Mario is a plumber going through worlds and tunnels, Sonic does the same thing but he's a hedgehog and not a human being. There are different ways to play Sonic. You can always hook up the traditional Sega game console, or you can simply go online on your personal computer connected over the internet. There are many games patterned along the original Sonic game version.

Sonic is one of those lost classic games from the early years of console gaming. The earlier versions were the greatest games in the entire series. They sold very rapidly, and had a lot of replay value to them. Even if you beat the game, there were various things you could continue to do throughout the game to enjoy it further, from collecting chaos gems, to finding all the hidden areas.
