by
Ally White
The 38 years-old relief pitcher Marino Rivera obtained second place in his career saves with 479 over passing Lee Smith in the all-time list of saves. This is also Mo's 36th save during the present 2008 season. During the last game against the White Sox, it just took Mo seven pitches to close the win for the Yankees.

New Yankee Closer David Robertson: Stepping in for Mariano Rivera
by
Paul Ciullo
Replacing a legend is never easy. Even more so when that legend happens to be Mariano Rivera, one of most dominant relievers in major league history and baseball's all-time saves leader. With Mo going down with torn ACL and meniscus and Joba Chamberlain out for the season as well, an area of extreme depth for the Bombers has quickly become an area of some concern. While Yankee manager Joe Girardi has indicated that relievers David Robertson and Rafael Soriano will likely share closing duties for the remainder of the season, chances are that Robertson will get the majority of the opportunities.

Voice Training Could Have Prevented Vocal Cord Surgery for Yankees Mariano Rivera
by
Nancy Daniels
It is sad that Mariano Rivera underwent surgery on his vocal folds (cords) recently. The Yankees' closer was diagnosed with severe vocal abuse in which polyps had developed on his vocal folds. A month prior to his surgery, he noticed a decrease in his ability to speak which was characterized by a raspy, whispery quality. What is interesting is that, with the right training, he could have prevented it.

The 600 Save Closer
by
Mickey Morgan
The Save didn't become an official Major League Baseball (MLB) statistic until 1969. Prior to the 1970s, starting pitchers typically finished games. When they were not able to finish a game, managers had to call on a group of "has-beens" they kept in the bullpen. Pitchers like knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm, made a living coming out of the bullpen. In the '70s, managers began looking for pitchers who could be counted on to get a few crucial outs toward the end of the game. The great Yankees teams of the late '70s and early '80s relied on one of the best relievers; Hall of Famer Rich "Goose" Gossage. Gossage came up a pure reliever with the Chicago White Sox, hit his prime with the Yankees. Fans began to pay attention to saves, which relievers earned by entering a game with a slim lead and preserving the victory. By the 1980s, relief pitchers like Dan Quisenberry, Bruce Sutter and Dennis Eckersley became stars in their own right. The reliever role evolved toward increased specialization. The era of the iron-man closer coming in during the 7th inning was short-lived. By the late '80s, closers were being asked to get only three outs.
