On September 18, 2010 Nintendo released the fifth generation of it's popular Pokemon franchise of games. When the original pair of Pokemon games - Red and Blue - were released in 1996 no one could have predicted the massive success this series was going to have on the history of gaming. More than 15 years have passed since these games first made an appearance on the market, and there is no indication that the popularity of the franchise is going to wane any time soon.

Generation V introduces a multitude of new features to the series, along with a new cast of Pokemon which has yet to be translated. Generation 4 left off with 493, but with the addition of generation 5, there are now a total of 649 different Pokemon!

The Pokemon story, in case you didn't know, isn't really a story at all. You'd be pardoned for thinking it was, with all the Pokemon goods for sale now. My son at the moment is absolutely mad for anything Pokemon Black and White, including Pokemon Plushies (those are Pokemon stuffed toys) and especially the Pokemon Black and White Game Cards (Holofoil cards being especially valuable). He definitely wants the Nintendo DS Pokemon Black and White game (I think he dreams about it, and he?ll just have to keep on dreaming because he's not getting that for a while).

Pokemon is a great game for the imagination as can be seen in all the spinoff merchandise in stores and web sites. The new Pokemon game is Pokemon Black and White and it is incredibly hot. I wanted to buy my son a new set of Pokemon Black and White Cards and the Pokemon store was sold out. I did get him two Pokemon Plush Toys (Pokemon stuffed toys) and he was happy.

But that, as far as a story goes- in regards to the relationship between trainer and Pokemon- that is about as it. The real distinguishing feature of the Pokemon is its ability to fight in the arena- what kind of special power it possesses and how effective it is against particular adversaries.

Around the core video game, there is a whole solar system of spinoffs: Pokemon plush toys (Pokemon stuffed toys), pokedolls, Pokemon Zuken and Tomy figures, Pokemon cards and a whole multi-category within that such as legendary Pokemon cards, promo cards, and holofoil cards, not to mention the huge profits being made off the media of Pokemon DVD's, movies, and the TV series. What is it about a computer game that has taken off this big?
