Mountain West Says BCS Football Ranking System is Unfair - Submitted Eight Team Playoff Proposal

The Mountain West Conference is fed up with the BCS and has submitted a proposal to Congress for an eight team playoff. The proposal would dismantle the BCS and create a college basketball style playoff. A committee would be assembled to pick the top eight college football teams to play in a playoff to determine the National Champion.

BCS Football Standings Screwups - 2003 and 2004

The BCS screwed up in 2003. LSU, Oklahoma, and USC all had one loss, and college football ended up with a split National Championship, the exact thing the BCS was supposed to fix. Then, in 2004, USC, OU, and Auburn all went undefeated, creating a BCS nightmare. Again they couldn't get it right.

The creators of the Bowl Championship Series computer formulas are the only group in sports who are not held accountable for their rankings. The BCS is constantly criticized, yet the creators of the computer rankings are not. Why are they not responsible for the ails of the BCS?

Replacing what was known as the Bowl Alliance, the Bowl Championship Series is the most recent effort to crown a National Champion. The Conference commissioners and the Notre Dame AD are the administrators of the BCS. Through a rating system that identifies the teams who are to play each other at the end of the season for the National Championship are the two teams who got the highest ratings.

College football coaches do not have enough time to watch other teams around the country. They are biased toward their team and conference, and now they are making their votes private. The American Football Coaches Association says it's to make the poll better, but really it's to keep people from noticing how bad it is.
