The official reviews for The Amazing Spider-Man are in. While the film itself isn't released here in the UK for another week, the general consensus is the Marc Webb directed Amazing Spider-Man is a good film that diminishes itself by rehashing an origin no one really wanted to see.

If you know anything about me you'll know that I'm a huge Spider-Man fan. In fact one could label me as a fanboy. My room is littered with Spider-Man action figures, posters and I'm proud to say his comics. As both a Spider-Man fan and a video-game enthusiast I'm no stranger to his video games- my Xbox Live Gamer-Score attests to the fact that I've played them all. So like everyone else I was not surprised that a new game was announced to go with the new movie. And you know what? It's actually the best Spider-Man game ever made.

It's been a crazy week for comic book fans and that's largely due to the release of the teaser trailers for next year's three big comic book movies. We've had The Dark Knight Rises teaser, and a leaked trailer for The Avengers, both of which I looked at here. Next up is next year's The Amazing Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey and Rhys Ifans as Dr Curt Conners, aka The Lizard.

In this tale, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is a high school kid who was left behind by his parents years ago. He's never been able to find out why they left or where they are, but he hopes to find that out one day.Since his abandonment, he's been raised by his Aunt May (Sally Field) and his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen). He lives a normal with them and never gets into any trouble with the exception of the occasional run-in with the high school bullies.

It's the reboot none of us really needed, but probably the one we deserved right now. That was my thought process when sitting down ready to watch Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. While the latest Spidey-flick does tread over a lot of previously covered ground, it manages to tell much more of an emotional tale than what any other superhero blockbuster has managed to do, making it one of the better comic book movies out there.

'The Amazing Spider-Man' Earns Title With Great Cast, Direction

To say that indie director Marc Webb (rightfully so with that last name) was a fitting choice to bring the much loved, but heavily admonished, Spider-Man franchise back around to its small, human roots is a severe understatement. After the announcement of the Sony Pictures reboot (instead of the originally planned 4th and 5th films, continuing Sam Raimi's story with Tobey Maguire and Kirstin Dunst) just 5 short years after our friendly neighborhood web-slinger bowed out with the critically panned (somewhat unfairly so)
Spider-Man 3,
I found myself a tad catatonic concerning a seemingly unnecessary restart when we recently witnessed the character's genesis onscreen less than a decade ago.

The Amazing Spider-Man has seen more than its fair share of criticism after the major reboot in "Brand New Day", but readers who have stuck with the wall crawler have been enjoying some solid storytelling, and the latest story arc, entitled "Shed", featured in Amazing Spider-Man issues 630 through 633 might just have spider-fans rushing back to their local comic shop to get a piece of the action. Though there's only one major fight in the 4 issue storyline, there's plenty of violence and tense, gritty action to sate the appetite of anyone who thinks Spidey books...

The Amazing Spider-Man does a decent job of retelling the same story we've seen before in previous film versions, but it doesn't bother to reinvent anything. It isn't any more serious than Sam Raimi's vision and no less silly either. The action, adventure, and drama are all there, but so are the contrivances, the overabundance of computer animation, and the abysmal villain's ridiculous plan to rule the world.
