2011 NYC Marathon Guaranteed Entry - How It Works

Entry into the 2011 New York City Marathon lottery process opened on January 10 this year, and the application period will remain open until April 19 of 2011. If you enter the lottery, then you will have probably about a 1 in 3 chance of actually getting accepted into the race (although those numbers will vary based on how many people actually enter the lottery this year.) However, it is possible to bypass the lottery through a guaranteed entry. There are a few ways to do so, but once you have applied as a guaranteed runner (for example, by running a qualifying time that lets you bypass the lottery) then what happens next?

I was in the best shape of my life, looking for a new PR in the NYC Marathon . . . and I nearly died. Midway through the race, my kidneys shut down. I had no idea what was wrong and still finished the race. After being misdiagnosed and going a full week without kidney function, my creatinine level was so high the mortality rate for people in my condition was 50%. Fortunately, I lived to share my story. Now, it's my job to educate other marathon runners of the risk of Rhabdomyolysis, because nobody else is.
