Ness Notes (Jan 26)

The biggest news coming out of last night's busy 12-game NBA schedule was that yes, Ron Artest was going to the Sacramento Kings for Peja Stojakovic. Here's hoping the Maloof brothers don't get rid of The Palms Hotel anytime soon! As for on court action, the Pistons needed OT but their 106-102 win over the Bucks give them a 35-5 record, making it the fourth-best 40-game start in NBA history.

All three of college basketball's remaining unbeatens are in action on Wednesday. No. 1 Duke (16-0) will host North Carolina State (14-2) on ESPN at 7:00 ET. A win will match the school's best-ever start of 17-0, set by the 1991-92 team which opened 17-0 on the way to a second consecutive national title. Duke has beaten NC St in 18 of the last 20 meetings between the schools and has won NINE straight home games, since losing 77-60 exactly 11 years ago today! Duke is favored by 11 points with a total of 145.

Duke (81-68), Florida (113-62) and Pittsburgh (76-68) all won last night and will head into the weekend as the nation's only three remaining undefeated teams. Illinois won its first 29 games last year before losing its regular season finale at Ohio State, 65-64. The Illini then won the Big-10 tourney and made it all the way to the national championship game, where they lost to the Tar Heels, 75-70.

Tuesday's NBA six-game card is highlighted by Detroit visiting New Jersey at 7:35 ET. The Pistons are off to the 4th-best 42-game start in NBA history at 37-5
and will take an 11-game winning streak (a league season-high) into the contest. The Nets own a eight-game home winning streak but that's a little deceiving.

And then there were NONE! Three Division I teams began Saturday undefeated but by day's end, all three had lost. No. 1 Duke lost at Georgetown (87-84) and No. 2 Florida lost at Tennessee (80-76), both falling to 17-1. No. 9 Pittsburgh (now 15-1) lost at St John's, 55-50.

The Ron Artest story somewhat overshadows a busy 12-game schedule in tonight's NBA, so I'll turn my attention to Wednesday's 42-game college basketball card. My free play on Wednesday is North Carolina over Boston College at 9:00 ET. After a 2-0 sweep in last night's college hoops, I'm now 14-5-1 since January 14. Tonight, I'm back with two more HUGE 20* plays, my Conference Rivalry GOY and my Conference Revenge GOY. I'm also featuring my first 15* CBB total of the season. My 15* plays in CBB have opened '06 winning at the rate of 75%! In the NBA, I look to bounce back from last night's loss, with my Line Value Game of the Month.

I don't know if any of you are as old as me (or FEEL as old) but about FOUR decades ago, Joe Garagiola (I guess if remember him you're as old!) wrote a book titled, "Baseball is a Funny Game." Well, the NBA can be pretty 'funny' too. Consider this. The Nuggets entered last night's home game with the Clippers on a seven-game winning streak and had gone 11-2 in January. Marcus Camby, the league's top rebounder had missed the team's last 15 games (Nuggets were 11-4 without him) but was set to return for last night's game.

Duke, Florida and Pittsburgh all won yesterday in college hoops, a much better result than the previous Saturday, when all three teams suffered their first loss of the season. No. 5 Texas was the day's biggest loser, as the Longhorns saw their nine-game winning streak snapped by Oklahoma at Norman, when they lost 82-72 to the Sooners.

By beating the T-wolves last night 90-74, the Pistons avoided their first two-game losing streak of the season. Detroit is now 38-6 and has followed its six losses by winning its next game by an average margin of 13.3 PPG! The Mavericks won their 10th straight last night, edging the Grizzlies 81-80. Dallas has now held all 10 of its recent "victims" to less that 100 points. Bettors were well aware of this game, as Dallas opened as a two-point favorite but closed as a 1 1/2-point underdog!

It was a relatively quiet night in college basketball on Friday. South Florida (0-8 in Big East) lost at home to DePaul 80-66, the school's 10th straight loss. In the Ivy League, Penn remained unbeaten in league play (3-0) with a 68-51 home win over Brown and Dartmouth fell to 2-16 (0-5 in Ivy) with a 63-47 loss at Cornell. I mention these scores because Penn is one of 10 remaining Division I schools still unbeaten in conference play entering this weekend's action, while Dartmouth and South Florida are two of EIGHT schools which are still winless in league games!
