The Chicago skyline is something of a miracle that rose out of the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. In this horrific event the entire center city was burn to the ground and hundreds of people were killed making it one of the greatest tragedies of American History. However, with the vision of men like Potter Palmer and Marshall Field the city was able to take up its vision of being a great metropolis and moved forward to build what was at the time the most modern city in the world.

According to popular legend the Great Chicago Fire, which began the evening of Sunday October 8, 1871 and inundated south Chicago Illinois hospital with corpses and burn victims, began when a cow belonging to Mrs. Catherine O'Leary kicked over a kerosene lamp in her barn and ignited a pile of hay. In those days Chicago was a boom town - one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. As a result most of the city, at least outside the downtown area, consisted of rickety wooden tenement houses and cottages which made perfect fire-traps.
