In June of 1923, Carl Fisher, relinquished the reins of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and handed them to his fellow stock holder, James Allison and retired from the management team. He announced that the speedway had outlived its purpose, which was to serve as an automobile proving ground. The race was simply a byproduct of that enterprise.

Since 1957 this organization, through its members and affiliates, has organized parades, dances, and community events in order to help shine the light on the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The Indy 500, in many ways, has helped shape the destiny of Indianapolis and its citizens. The founders of the festival were very much aware of the symbiotic relationship between the citizens of Indianapolis and the world's most famous auto race.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway sits within the beltway of Indianapolis. Interstate 465, which circles Indianapolis, has downtown located slightly south of center. The IMS would be very close to 9:00 o'clock, if you viewed the beltway like a clock from above. The distance between the speedway and downtown Indianapolis is approximately 5 miles.

It is virtually impossible to see the entire track from any one seat at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, it is possible to see substantial portions of the track in some seats. Generally, the higher the seats the more track you will see.
