In January 2009, Heartland Payment Systems announced a data breach that may have compromised tens of millions of credit and debit card transactions. This breach was one of the largest in history, and came on the heels of another large breach in December 2008 of RBS Worldplay (a susidiary of Citizens Financial Group Inc.) which compromised 1.5 million credit card numbers.
